Joanne Greenbaum (b. 1953, New York City) is known for her use of vibrant color and intuitive composition, her works achieving balance through the unconventional layering of forms in a complex pictorial space. A desire for continual reinvention is the motivating force behind her distinctive and immediately recognizable paintings, works on paper, and ceramics. Often using drawing as the springboard for her paintings, Greenbaum formulates a vital relationship between the two approaches, which reflects her unique vocabulary of line and volume.

She has exhibited widely at venues worldwide, including Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Germany; MoMA PS1, Queens, New York; and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, Kansas. In 2008 a career-spanning survey of her work was mounted by Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich; it traveled to the Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach, Germany. In 2018 a comprehensive solo exhibition, Joanne Greenbaum: Things We Said Today, was held at Tufts University Art Galleries at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; it traveled to the Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles. Greenbaum has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; grants from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation; and an artist residency with the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas.
