Whitney Claflin (b. 1983, Providence, RI) lives and works in New York City. She received her MFA from Yale in 2009 and her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005. Claflin’s practice toggles between an update of modernist schemas on canvas—warped grids, deadpan monochromes, dappled abstractions betraying Impressionist lineage—and a broader exercise in contemporaneity, relating a painting to the lifestyle and milieu that cultivate it. Recent exhibitions include Drei, Cologne; Vacancy, Shanghai; Derosia, New York; G2 Kunsthalle, Leipzig; Layr, Vienna; Bel Ami, Los Angeles; Office Baroque, Antwerp; Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn; and Clearing, Brussels. Claflin currently has a solo exhibition on view at Derosia, New York, through October 19, 2024.
