This year's benefit auction and exhibition, "The World Is The Work", brings together artists, curators, and art lovers from The Drawing Center's community. Each guest curator will present a selection of five or more works on paper by artists they admire. Works will be on view at The Drawing Center from October 7 through October 11, and will be available for purchase through a silent auction benefiting The Drawing Center and participating artists. Bidding will begin on September 29 at 12:00 pm ET and end on October 14 at 12:00 pm ET. The Drawing Center rbrickman@drawingcenter.org

Hala Schoukair (b. Beirut, 1957) received her master’s degree in Cinematographic Studies from the Sorbonne University, Paris, and has been painting and exhibiting her work since her graduation in 1981.

 

Hala's work is featured in the 61st Venice Biennale 2026, In Minor Keys curated by Koyo Kouoh. She has also had a 2025 solo show at Saleh Barakat Gallery in Beirut, and was part of the exhibition ARABOFUTUR at the Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris. She has also been participating in both Art Fair Dubai and the Abu Dhabi Art Fair for the last few years, and had a solo exhibition, represented by Gallery Bessiere, at Art Paris 2022. 

 

Hala’s previous solo shows included You Promised Me Spring, 2017, and Grains of Light, 2014, both of which were held at Agial Art Gallery in Beirut.

 

Recent group exhibitions included Intimate Garden Scene by Ashkal Alwan at The Sursock Museum, Beirut, 2023- 2024. She has also participated in Continuity and Change: Islamic Tradition in Contemporary Art at The Williamsburg Art and Historical Center in New York (2007); Morgenröte, aurora borealis and Levantin: Into your solar plexus at the Knusthalle Bern museum in Switzerland (2015); and the 32nd Salon D’Automne at the Sursock Museum (2016).

 

Hala’s work became part of the permanent collection of the Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University, IL, in 2023, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in 2024.

 

Hala moved from New York to Lebanon in 2019, and currently lives in the town of Ras El Metn, where she has established The Saloua Raouda Choucair Foundation, which commemorates her mother’s art and legacy.

Artworks purchased at the auction will be available for pickup at The Drawing Center beginning on October 19, 2026. Wrapping of the artwork is provided.
